Going to school in Brazzaville
Congo gained independence from France in 1960 and subsequently became the first African communist country. Since then, coups and revolutions have followed one another, leading to a civil war that – in alternating phases – continues to this day. This situation of instability has led the country to a contradictory condition: despite being one of Africa’s main oil exporters, more than 50 percent of its inhabitants live below the poverty line.
Children very often do not have access to a proper education system: there are few schools, and families located in the most remote areas do not have the means for their children to reach them.
Franciscan presence
Franciscans returned permanently as missionaries to Congo in 1920. In 1991 they founded a community in the capital city of Brazzaville and after a few years opened a shelter community for minors there, housing about 70 boys.
A Poor Clare convent and two formation houses for postulants and novices are also activated over the years.
The new bet is the construction of St. Clare School in Djiri for secondary education. A place where street children can be guaranteed the professional qualification needed to find a job and build a decent future for themselves.
Project
The friars have decided to build a new school in Djiri, a suburb in the District of the capital city of Brazzaville where there is already a parish that plays the role of human aggregator, social support and Christian apostolate.
The new school will welcome the street children assisted by the parish but also the children of the district who by paying the tuition will guarantee the possibility of free access to the street children. The school will then be self-supporting and we will have the possibility of giving paid work to the school staff.
The friars of the community have all been trained in Rome and Jerusalem and will be able to teach in the school and be reference figures for the pupils.
