A flood of historic proportions
In 2024, Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul was hit by historic flooding: between late April and early May, heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, devastating more than 400 municipalities. Porto Alegre and surrounding areas experienced water levels not seen since 1941. The event claimed more than 170 lives and over 2 million people affected, with hundreds of thousands displaced .
Friars’ commitment to displaced people
The Friars Minor offered immediate help to hundreds of people, opening convents to welcome evacuees and providing basic necessities.
The Minister General of the Friars Minor, Friar Massimo Fusarelli, has issued an appeal to support the friars in coping with this emergency.
