Background

Togo and its neighboring countries represent one of the most problematic areas on the entire African continent. Widespread poverty, mainly due to a climate affected by long periods of drought, is compounded by serious social problems. In fact, the population suffers from the outbreak of conflicts caused by the spread of jihadist terrorist groups and the spread of diseases such as AIDS.

The friars in Togo and the Ivory Coast

In the 1950s it was French Friars Minor who settled in Togo and Ivory Coast. Since then friars from all over Europe chose to join the missions present in this area of Africa, eventually originating the Province of the Incarnate Word, which today has 150 friars distributed in Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Benin.

The formation of friars in Togo

The friars of the province play a key role in the development of the local society. They are involved in spiritual care, of course, but also in the education of children as well as the vocational training of adults in agricultural or technical fields. For all these reasons, they themselves need to achieve a significant level of training in both spiritual and technical areas, which requires a considerable economic effort for their communities.
