The tsunami that destroys villages

On Sept. 28, 2018, a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi, triggering a tsunami that destroyed the capital city of Palu and the surrounding areas of Sigi and Donggala, resulting in a total of more than 4,300 deaths. Villages primarily devoted to fishing and agriculture were wiped out, along with infrastructure and all resources necessary for the communities’ very livelihood.

Rebuilding safe houses as a foundation for the future

The Friars Minor took action in the immediacy of the earthquake event, offering their contribution to the disaster-stricken populations for basic needs. However, the contribution was not limited to the emergency phase: over the course of these years, several initiatives aimed at re-establishing dignified living conditions in particular for the villages of Labuana and Sivalenta. Concretely, the friars have promoted:

  • HABITATION SUPPORT: Efforts in this regard were directed at rebuilding the villages with earthquake-resistant criteria. In addition to housing, kitchens and latrines had to be built to ensure the necessary sanitary safety.
  • LABOUR: To support the resumption of the inhabitants’ main source of livelihood, the friars provided for the purchase of boats, engines and nets for fishing. The agricultural sector was also encouraged with the purchase of necessities for the harvest.
  • SPIRITUALITY: Sivalenta is a Christian village. Therefore, the friars have taken steps to promote the construction of a new church, a place that is a landmark for the local community.
