Background
The Asmat ethnic group inhabits the Agats area, in Papua, and is one of the peoples that has remained isolated for a long time from modernity. When the region became a province of Indonesia, its population centers became increasingly open to the arrival of officials and businessmen from other parts of the Asian country. The Asmats had to deal with the problems associated with their illiteracy and with a traditional system unable to relate to the present.
The friars in Papua Indonesia
The Friars Minor play a decisive role in the development of the region: the bishop of Agats is in fact the Franciscan Monsignor Aloysius Morwito OFM. Since taking office, Msgr. Aloysius has taken the plight of the Asmat to heart, establishing a school in 2020 that can provide young people with the training they need to cope with an entirely new society.
A school for Asmat youth
The Agats school allows 95 young people to be trained by a quality teaching staff and in a comfortable environment. Thanks to the generosity of donors, we have already been able to support the expansion of the number of classrooms to accommodate an additional 60 young people and built a women’s dormitory. Our commitment to Asmat youth, however, has not yet ended.
