The earthquake that devastated Moroccan villages.
On September 8, 2023, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas region, about 70 km from Marrakech. It was the most intense in 120 years, with surface tremors causing widespread devastation.
Official accounts estimate more than 2,900 dead and more than 5,600 injured, while nearly 41,000 homes are reported damaged or destroyed, and hundreds of mountain villages razed to the ground.
The friars’ commitment to the Moroccan people
The Friars Minor, who have been present in the Moroccan territory since the very origins of the Franciscan Order, are offering constant help to the earthquake-stricken population.
The Minister General of the Friars Minor, Friar Massimo Fusarelli, has issued an appeal to support the friars in coping with this emergency.
