Background<\/h3>\n

The Asmat ethnic group inhabits the Agats area, in Papua, and is one of the peoples that has remained isolated for a long time from modernity. When the region became a province of Indonesia, its population centers became increasingly open to the arrival of officials and businessmen from other parts of the Asian country. The Asmats had to deal with the problems associated with their illiteracy and with a traditional system unable to relate to the present.<\/span><\/p>\n
