Juba Mission, South Sudan<\/h1>\n

Located in the heart of the African continent, South Sudan<\/strong> is a young nation with a population of 12.6 million. Its independence<\/strong> dates back only to 2011, when a referendum sanctioned separation from Sudan after nearly 50 years of civil war. In 2013, a coup d’\u00e9tat<\/strong> sparked renewed ethnic conflict between the Dinka<\/strong> and Nuer<\/strong> ethnic groups, which still drags on despite international pressure and several fragile peace agreements punctually broken. <\/p>\n

In addition to producing millions of deaths and refugees, decades of civil war have fueled a condition of severe infrastructural and economic backwardness. Despite significant oil and mineral resources, the exploitation of which is impeded by social and political instability, today South Sudan is considered the poorest country in the world. <\/p>\n

A group of friars to nurture hope<\/h3>\n

The friars reached Juba, the capital of South Sudan, in 2012. The initial intent is to offer pastoral guidance to the faithful of Holy Trinity Parish. In 2015, a friary was attached to the parish, destined to become a reference point for the local community.
Since then, the Franciscan community in Juba has activated several pathways to assist the weaker segments of the population. <\/p>\n
